German School System

Recently, I learned about German school system. Here kids are divided into 3 separate schools after 4th grade, depending on their ‘performance’. Only students of top of the 3 types of schools can get a university degree. Other’s don’t even get a degree, which can be called High School. For each class of students, the kind of job they are going to do is almost fixed.

I find it a weird system. Kid’s life is decided before he/she is in capacity to understand what is happening to him/her. If kids are asked to choose at the age of 16-17 then it may make sense because at this age the kid can follow the meaning of good performance.

I couldn’t find rational behind this system of education. There must be some ‘sophisticated reasoning’ that justify such system.
